Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a critical health threat with global dimensions. It has been estimated that – with no efforts and advances in the field –an estimate of 10 million people can die from AMR or related diseases in 2050, surpassing the incidence of cancer. Recent forecasts suggest that 39 million people could die directly from antibiotic-resistant infections between 2025 and 2050, and 8.22 million deaths could be associated with AMR annually by 2050. Several factors promote the spread of AMR, including the lack of effective and innovative antibiotics, the misuse or abuse of antibiotics in several geographic areas, and the weak surveillance on the evolution of AMR for several pathogens. In this alarming scenario, research is highly fragmented and poorly multidisciplinary, which results in an ineffective training of young scientists skilled in the AMR field and endowed with an open-minded and global vision of the problem. We strongly believe that multidisciplinary training of young researchers into the multiple faces of AMR can strongly lead to the development of successful careers in the field, as well as reinforce and advance the knowledge and the EU and global competitiveness in the fight against AMR. In this context, FEBS is an ideal framework for organizing an Advanced Lecture Course on the multidisciplinary aspects of AMR because molecular life sciences represent the key towards the success in the fight against bacterial resistance. The proposed Advanced Lecture Course aims to bring together scientists from different disciplines and sectors (i.e., industry and academia) with consolidated training skills, to train early stage researchers and advanced scientists into the multidisciplinary contents related to AMR, starting from monitoring and surveillance of AMR insurgence, spread and evolution, to the development of specific therapeutic candidates by various approaches including AI, and microbiology of AMR and anti-AMR candidates. Molecular sciences are at the forefront of the training program and are a common topic in the talks delivered by renowned experts in the field.
