 The Research Group "Intercultural Studies (English-Spanish): Pragmatic and Discourse Issues" (PAI HUM 640) was created by Prof. Pilar Garcés-Conejos Blitvich in 2001. In 2002 we started a series of biennial international conferences, named <strong><em style="text-align: justify;">International Symposium on Intercultural, Cognitive and Social Pragmatics</em></strong><em>.</em> This initiative is now known as <em><strong>EPICS </strong></em>after the Spanish acronym for <strong><em>Encuentros de Pragmática Intercultural, Cognitiva y Social</em></strong>.</div>

 EPICS seeks to be a forum where applied linguists and practitioners in the field of pragmatics can meet, share experiences, discuss common problems, and present their latest research. EPICS also wishes to create awareness among graduating students of the usefulness of and growing interest in this area of linguistic expertise. For this reason, each conference focuses on distinct sub-fields of pragmatics or any of its extant theoretical frameworks. EPICS III was chosen as the venue for the international launching of the Journal <em>Intercultural Pragmatics </em>(Mouton de Gruyter), while EPICS VI hosted the launching of the <em>Journal of Language Aggression and Conflict </em>(John Benjamins).</div>

   <strong>EPICS I</strong> (10-12 April 2002) was dedicated to the theme "Current Issues in Pragmatic Research". Its keynote speakers were Juliane House (University of Hamburg) and Bruce Fraser (Boston University). The venue was the University of Seville.</div>

   <strong>EPICS II</strong> (26-28 May 2004) focused on the theme "Intercultural Pragmatics". Its keynote speakers were Istvan Kecskes (SUNY at Albany) and Peter Grundy (Northumbria University). The conference venue was also the University of Seville.</div>

   <strong>EPICS III</strong> (20-22 February 2008) delved into "Intercultural Pragmatics and Language Teaching". Its keynote speakers were Helen Spencer-Oatey (University of Warwick) and Victoria Escandell Vidal (UNED, Madrid). This time, the conference venue was Pablo de Olavide University in Seville.</div>

   <strong>EPICS IV</strong> (24-26 March 2010) addressed the theme "(Im)Politeness and Interpersonal Communication". Its keynote speakers were Miriam Locher (University of Basel) and Pilar Garcés-Conejos Blitvich (University of North Carolina at Charlotte). The conference venue was Pablo de Olavide University again.</div>

   <strong>EPICS V</strong> (14-16 March 2012) centred on "Relevance Theory: Recent Developments, Current Challenges and Future Directions". Its keynote speakers were Deirdre Wilson and Robyn Carston (UCL and CSMN, Oslo). The conference venue continued to be Pablo de Olavide University.</div>

Its keynote speakers were Jonathan Culpeper (Lancaster University) and John Joseph (The University of Edinburgh). The conference was hosted by the University of Seville.</div>

   <strong>EPICS VII</strong> (4-6 May 2016) analysed "Pragmatics in/through the New Technologies". Its keynote speakers were Alexandra Georgakopoulou (King's College London) and Francisco Yus Ramos (University of Alicante). This time, the conference was again hosted by Pablo de Olavide University.</div>

   <strong>EPICS VIII</strong> (2-4 May 2018) set the spotlight on "Communication, Culture and Cognition". Its keynote speakers were Penelope Brown (Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics), Maria Sifianou (National and Kapodistrian University of Athens) and Dan Sperber (Institut Jean Nicod, CNRS & Central European University). The conference was hosted by the University of Seville.</div>
